Book Review: "You Know When The Men Are Gone" by Siobhan Fallon

(image credit: The Vermont Book Shop)
I normally don't do book reviews, I feel like I'm not a great book-reviewer-write, but I had to do one with this book. I have let you all MilSpouses know about this book. I want to let you know how great this book is.

I had a hard time putting the book down. I could've read it in a day, but I wanted to the book to last a few more days.

The book is written by Siobhan Fallon, an Army wife who was stationed in Fort Hood, TX. Its a compilation of short stories surrounding the Army: deployment, affairs, love, trust, marriage, death and the war.

Fallon really makes you think about the issues regarding the Army, and the military, when deployment comes along. It is not that she wants to make you doubt your Spouse, but these are issues that are common in the military life, issues that surround us but don't necessarily involve us.

The one thing I really like about this book is how she would end the short stories. She didn't end them happy nor sad, she ended them in the non-fairy tale way.

The only thing that made me sort of question the book were some secondary characters. You have a Serbian wife, a group of Hispanic wives and a group of German wives which they all stick together. It makes it seem that foreign wives stick together and don't want to branch out, BUT I would like to remind everyone that not every foreign wife not does that, at least count me in that 1%.

Overall this book is a MUST READ.

Military Movies

Ever since DH and I started dating back in 2007, I have found myself paying more attention to the movies where the have military-esque details or are about the military. I have noticed in certain movies or shows where they have USMC posters (ie: the show "Veronica Mars" or the USMC emblem on a t-shirt they are wearing (ie: the movie "Goal"). Its not the that I was blind before about it (ok, maybe I was because before I never dated a military guy), its because I didn't have a connection to it. Make sense? Its like this: I probably have watched a million and one movies involving the military and not once did I think about it, but now that I'm a Marine Wife I pay a A LOT more attention then I did before. Why? Because the military is now my life and I have a connection to it.

I also have to admit something, I'm a woos when it comes to watching military movies...I cry like a girl...wait, I am a girl :) I have caught myself crying over and over again every time I watch movies, and some shows, that are military based. It also goes beyond movies and shows, books have the same effect on me (ie: "The Lucky One"). Its also hard for me to watch a military movie because I know how I will react, its a given fact that I'm going to cry. I'm not saying that they are all sad, but they all have realistic points.

A few hours ago I finally watch "A Walk In My Shoes" and let me just tell you that it only took 10mins for me to shed a tear..."WHAT A WOOS". It goes the same for "Army Wives". So what do I do to try to avoid these tears, I don't watch these movies...I'm not going to lie, I'm weak as the next person is, behind closed doors of course, so I know sometimes I can't handle that.

With this deployment coming up I know I wont be able to handle watching any Military related movie or show, because I know that if I shed a tear or two watching these when DH is here, I know I will be a mess when he's deployed.

My question to you MilSpouses, am I the only one that reacts like this?

New Years Resolutions

Im not much for New Years Resolutions for the fact that I NEVER follow them, ever...hence as to why I never make them. But this year I'm going to make one, or two, and it's going to be ones that i can easily follow. Im not doing one that consists of me losing weight or eating right because it just wont happen...I LOVE candy just too much and I love being a homebody at times :)

My resolution is more on a personal note, here they go:

-Keep opinions to myself UNLESS asked

AND

-Somehow, someday, acquire MORE patience cause the one i have now is seriously lacking potential

AND

-Stop having people walk over me and DH

I hope you all had a great New Years!
